A NSW man has been charged after allegedly shooting at his neighbour's house in a fit of road rage.

The row allegedly began when two cars nearly collided in Lake Macquarie about 10.30pm on Thursday.

Police say a heated argument ensued in which one of the drivers, a 41-year-old man, threatened the other, who was his 26-year-old neighbour.

It is alleged the older man then went into his house, took out a slug gun with a shortened barrel and fired at his neighbour's property.

He will appear in court on Friday charged with malicious damage and firearm offences.
