A jury may begin its deliberations on Thursday at the Sydney retrial of Robert Xie, who is accused of murdering five family members.

Justice Elizabeth Fullerton on Wednesday continued her summing up to the NSW Supreme Court jury which began hearing the case on June 29.

Xie, 53, has pleaded not guilty to murdering five relatives of his wife, Kathy Lim, in their North Epping home in the early hours of July 18 2009.

He is accused of using a hammer-like object to inflict horrific head injuries on his newsagent brother-in-law Min Lin, 45; his wife Lily Lin, 43; her sister Irene, 39; and the Lins' two sons, Henry, 12, and Terry, 9.

Just before the judge sent the jurors home on Wednesday, she told them she was "genuinely hopeful" that they would begin their deliberations on Thursday afternoon.

She thanked them for being back after the Christmas break, saying it was "pretty tough" for them being "here at all".
