Roma have beaten Lazio 2-0 in a highly tactical city derby and retain second place in the Italy's Serie A.

The Rome sides battled hard in midfield during the first half on Sunday (Monday AEDT) at the Stadio Olimpico, where Lazio striker Ciro Immobile misfired twice before the break and his teammate Marco Parolo hit into the hands of Wojciech Szczesny.

Edin Dzeko missed Roma's first chance at 53 minutes, nodding feebly toward Federico Marchetti, who on 61 parried a better header from the tall Bosnian.

An ill-conceived clearance from Wallace broke the deadlock in the 64th minute, allowing Kevin Strootman to capitalise and beat the helpless Marchetti.

A brawl involving substitutes followed the goal of the Dutchman, who was booked as Lazio reserve Danilo Cataldi received his marching orders.

Radja Nainggolan clinched victory in the 77th mintute with a bouncing drive from distance that surprised Marchetti in his left corner.

Roma has now won four straight in the "Derby della Capitale" series, outscoring Lazio 10-2.

AC Milan rallied to beat gritty Crotone 2-1 earlier on Sunday thanks to a late Gianluca Lapadula goal and stayed within four points of league leaders Juventus, who beat Atalanta 3-1 on Saturday.

At the Giuseppe Meazza, the newly promoted Calbrian side went ahead from Diego Falcinelli but saw the hosts level before halftime with Mario Pasalic.

Milan M'Baye Niang had a penalty saved by Alex Cordaz but Lapadula struck with four minutes left, pouncing on a poor clearance to fire home.

Elsewhere, Sassuolo beat Empoli 3-0, Cagliari drew 1-1 at Pescara with Davide Di Gennaro dismissed, while Sampdoria had coach Marco Giampaolo sent off as they beat Torino 2-0.

Napoli beat Inter Milan 3-0 on Friday and are ahead of Lazio on goal difference.

Fiorentina and Palermo play the last fixture for Sunday.
