Aaron Royle is Australia's sole Olympic triathlon squad member backing up for the final WTS round in Edmonton.

Royle finished ninth in taxing conditions at the Rio Games.

Countrymen Ryan Bailie (infected blisters) and fellow Olympian Ryan Fisher have both withdrawn from the sprint format race in Edmonton on Sunday (early Monday AEST) but Royle chose to back up.

"I had three days rest after Rio where I was able to support other Australians in other sports and also attend the closing ceremony," he said on Friday.

"I've been getting the body back into action the past week and I'm looking forward to racing in Edmonton.

"It's looking to be a cold race similar to last year so that will throw up its challenges but I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Bailie and Fisher withdrew to ensure they would be fit for the WTS grand final in Cozumel, Mexico in mid-September.

Bailie is sixth on the WTS rankings, one spot behind fellow Australian Jake Birtwhistle.

In the men's race, Royle will be joined by 2014 Commonwealth Games teammate Dan Wilson and youngsters Matt Roberts and Luke Willian.

Rio Olympians Emma Moffatt, Erin Densham and Ashleigh Gentle all made an early call to skip the Edmonton race to also prepare for Cozumel.

The Australian challenge will led by Emma Jackson, Gillian Backhouse and Jaz Hedgeland.
