The RSPCA is investigating a reported greyhound burial site in bushland north of Newcastle.

The Swan Bay area will be searched after bushwalkers stumbled upon skulls that resembled dogs in bushland at the weekend.

Up to seven skulls with blunt trauma were found, the ABC reports.

The investigators will document and assess the scene after receiving a complaint about the site, RSPCA chief inspector David O'Shannessy said on Monday.

"The first thing they'll do is examine the scene and then they'll set about collecting the remnants of the bones and that sort of thing," Mr O'Shannessy told 2GB Radio.

"[They will then] bring them back so they can be examined by veterinarian a confirmation made as to the circumstances surrounding their death," he said.
