Electricity price hikes in South Australia could be slowed if a submission to the Australian Competition Tribunal is effective, Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis says.

The government is intervening in an appeal to the tribunal by SA Power Networks to let it grow its revenue by 15.4 per cent by 2020, following a more modest ruling by the Australian Energy Regulator.

In a statement on Monday, Mr Koutsantonis said state department executive Vince Duffy will make an oral submission to the tribunal in Melbourne on Thursday.
