A 50-year-old South Australian man has been charged with four counts of advocating terrorism.

Police will allege the Adelaide man posted videos to social media that encouraged people in overseas conflict zones to commit terrorist acts.

He was arrested on Thursday after information was passed to the South Australian Joint Counter Terrorism Team through the National Security Hotline and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court at a later date.

He was believed to already be in custody at the time of his arrest but further details have not be released.

However, police have moved to allay public fears over the allegations.

"There are no current or impending threats to the Australian community as a result of these activities," they said in a statement.
