A man accused of bringing a homemade bomb and gun to a shopping centre in Adelaide's north will remain behind bars after failing to apply for bail.

Dennis William Childs, of Elizabeth Grove, was arrested outside the Elizabeth Shopping Centre on Saturday after a police search of his backpack allegedly uncovered the two items,.

The 39-year-old faced the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday charged with aggravated endangering life and multiple weapons offences, and was remanded in custody.

The shopping centre was evacuated and the explosive device was immediately isolated near a loading bay, with bomb squad officers called in to perform a controlled detonation.

Police said the circumstances of the incident were still being investigated but they had ruled out the possibility of a terrorist attack.

No person was directly threatened and no one was injured.

Childs will next appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on January 17.
