Paceman Joe Mennie will get a simple message from his South Australian coach ahead of Friday's Sheffield Shield game against Tasmania.

Outperform Jackson Bird.

Mennie and Bird were candidates for Australia's squad for the first Test against South Africa in Perth.

Mennie got the nod but was made 12th man, so he's flown back to Adelaide to play in the Shield game against the Tigers.

"He needs to outperform Bird. And I will be telling him that," Redbacks coach Jamie Siddons said.

The Redbacks are seeking consecutive Shield wins while Tasmania, beaten by Victoria in last week's opening round, have been weakened by the withdrawal of allrounder James Faulkner because of a knee injury.

The Tigers also dropped Andrew Fekete and Caleb Jewell in favour of Jordan Silk, Dom Michael and Hamish Kingston.

SA will summon legspinner Adam Zampa into its starting XI, resulting in a paceman being squeezed out.

Either Kane Richardson or Daniel Worrall will carry the drinks for the home side with quicks Mennie and Chadd Sayers assured selection.

"They all played a great part in the game just gone so it will be tough," Siddons said.

Teams:

SA: Travis Head (capt), Kelvin Smith, Jake Weatherald, Callum Ferguson, Tom Cooper, Jake Lehmann, Alex Carey, Joe Mennie, Kane Richardson, Chadd Sayers, Daniel Worrall, Adam Zampa (12th man to be named).

Tasmania: George Bailey (capt), Jackson Bird, Cameron Boyce, Alex Doolan, Jake Doran, Ben Dunk, Dominic Michael, Hamish Kingston, Jordan Silk, Simon Milenko, Cameron Stevenson, Beau Webster (12th man to be named)
