A bushfire that was burning out of control in South Australia's Flinders Ranges has been contained but other parts of the state have been placed on high alert.

Residents in Hawker were told to leave their homes or take shelter on Friday afternoon as a stubble fire bore down on the rural town.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by Friday evening and the the Country Fire Service says the threat has reduced.

Meanwhile, a severe fire danger warning is in place for the Riverland and Murrylands areas in the state's southeast with very hot and dry weather forecast.
