A freight train driver has been hospitalised after he was hit by a falling tree while trying to remove another tree from a train track east of Adelaide.

The driver got out of the train at Onkaparinga Valley Road in Verdon just after 4am on Tuesday to clear the track when another part of a tree fell on him, causing non-serious injuries, a South Australian Police spokesman said.

He has been airlifted to Royal Adelaide Hospital and the track is being cleared.
