An Adelaide supermarket worker has been hogtied during an attempted robbery.

A man threatened the worker at Foodland in West Lakes Shore with a knife before tying his hands together at about 5.15am on Monday while demanding access to the store's safe, police say.

The victim said he didn't have access to the safe, prompting the man to tie the worker's feet together and flee empty handed.
