Scammers out of luck in central Qld

Scammers targeting Mackay may be out of luck after sending a fake traffic fine to a Queensland traffic cop's spouse.

The Road Policing Unit officer's partner was one of a number of residents to contact police after receiving an email urging them to open a link.

Clicking on the link would likely lead to ransomware, software designed to block access to a computer system until a ransom has been paid.

Police have urged anyone who may have received similar emails not to open the link and to report it to authorities.

Queensland Police only email traffic offences if the person being fined agrees to it after being pulled over.
