About 10,000 South Australian school leavers are heading for Victor Harbor, south of Adelaide, for the annual schoolies festival.

The festivities begin on Friday and continue over the weekend with police and ambulance crews and hundreds of volunteers keeping an eye on those enjoying the celebrations.

Superintendent Craig Wall says the young people taking part should also take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their friends.

"We need you to step up and look out for each another. This is your celebration, and we rely on your help," was his message to school leavers.

"We need you to support and stay close to your friends. Don't leave a mate with someone they don't know, and don't let them wander off by themselves."

Encounter Youth chief executive Nigel Knowles says the organisation will have 550 Green Team volunteers at Victor Harbor to ensure everyone has a positive experience.
