A 116-run opening stand between Elyse Villani and Suzie Bates has shot Perth into the top two on the women's Big Bash League ladder.

Chasing 118 for victory against the Melbourne Stars, Villani and Bates cruised towards the total, helping to ensure the victory with 23 balls to spare at Melbourne's Toorak Park.

Southern Stars batter Villani was finally dismissed with just two runs required for victory, caught at point for 57 off just 44 balls.

Meanwhile New Zealand representative Bates remained unbeaten on 54 from 53 deliveries.

The win helped the Scorchers leapfrog the Stars up the ladder, with the Melbourne side now falling back to fourth.

Earlier Meg Lanning top scored for the Stars with 30 from 27 balls, before she was unluckily run out while backing up by a deflection at the bowler's end.
