Treasurer Scott Morrison has taken his government's "jobs and growth" mantra abroad, telling an audience in the US that foreign investment was key to Australia's prosperity.

Speaking in New York, Mr Morrison spruiked the benefits of investing in an economy that had weathered the global financial crisis, terrorism, natural disasters and a significant fall in terms of trade.

He reiterated that Australia could not afford to "pull the doona over its head" and adopt a protectionist mindset if it wanted to secure the incomes and living standards for future generations.

"We want more growth and jobs ... and we know, from our experience, that foreign investment is vital to achieving this goal," the treasurer said.

Mr Morrison boasted about the stability of Australia's banks, its immigration system, infrastructure spending, housing market, trade deals, innovation agenda and commitment to reducing debt.

"We have a remarkable economic record and we are determined to keep it that way."
