Northern Territory police called off two dangerous chases of a stolen car which a group of youths used to allegedly ram raid a supermarket overnight.

Officers spotted the Ford Ranger twice in Alice Springs overnight and say eight juveniles deliberately crashed the ute into a supermarket.

Police are still on the hunt for the young offenders, who evaded police because they felt the pursuits put the public at risk.

It's the second ram raid in as many days after a group of five boys allegedly drove into a Darwin pub with a stolen car to take tills and alcohol during a crime spree on Wednesday night.

Police say they were forced to abandon several high-speed chases of the car which was used in another attempted ram raid and petrol station drive-off that night.

"This is extremely frustrating for police and members of the community," Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Jordan said.

"We assure the public that police are working tirelessly to resolve these type of incidents quickly and safely."

Chief Minister Michael Gunner this week outlined a four-year recruitment plan to increase frontline police numbers by 120 over the Labor government's term.

The extra officers will target youth crime in regional areas, NT Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw said.

He said there's been a crime spike in Alice Springs over the summer holidays.

"School holidays always present a challenge with kids getting bored," Mr Kershaw said said.

"Some are hungry, some break into houses just to get food. We've got some social issues there that we've got to deal with."

Mr Gunner said the new resources would be used in prevention and community engagement to reduce repeat offending.

Police are still searching for Jermaine Austral, a 20-year-old convict who escaped from an Alice Springs prison two weeks ago and who is a suspect in a violent carjacking at Aileron last week.
