Security breach at Auckland airport

A "thoughtless" passenger has caused delays at Auckland's airport by setting of an alarm while trying to bypass security.

Passengers from a Jetstar flight had to be taken off their plane and rescreened following the blunder at Auckland Airport's domestic terminal on Tuesday afternoon.

A passenger on a Wellington-bound plane tried to get past security because he was running late, a Civil Aviation spokeswoman says.

He forced his way through the "sharks' teeth" one-way metal exit gate, triggering an alarm.

It was standard safety and security procedure to re-screen passengers who were already in the secure area, she said.

"It is frustrating that one passenger's thoughtlessness has caused this."

She said two our three departing flights had been delayed as a result, although incoming flights were not affected.

The airport said screening had recommenced before 3pm local time (1300 AEST) and it apologised for delays.
