The Senate has called on the West Australian government to publicly release video footage of the final hours of 22-year Aboriginal woman Ms Dhu, who died in police custody two years ago.

The Senate backed WA Greens Senator Rachel Siewert's motion calling for the release of footage from the South Hedland police station and hospital of Ms Dhu's final moments, that coroner Ros Fogliani did not release at this year's inquest deeming it distressing.

The family renewed calls to release it following the recent ABC Four Corners program that showed indigenous teenage detainees being physically abused by guards at the Don Dale Detention Centre in the Northern Territory.
