The Turnbull government is waiting to see the shape of the new Senate before setting out its legislative timetable for the two measures that were used to trigger the July 2 double dissolution election - the Australian Building and Constructon Commission and registered organisations bills.

Special Minister of State Scott Ryan says the Australian Electoral Commission expects Senate results for every state and territory to be finalised on Wednesday or Thursday, well ahead of the resumption of parliament on August 30.

"That will give the government the opportunity to sit down with the new senators to negotiate passage of and support for this key legislation," Senator Ryan told Sky News on Sunday
