A red weather warning has been issued for southeast Queensland with severe storms expected to hit.

The alert issued by the Bureau of Meteorology on Saturday afternoon covers the Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Brisbane and surrounding areas.

It is expected thunderstorms with high winds and large hailstones will move east, hitting Ipswich and Beenleigh by 3pm.

Residents are warned to move cars undercover and away from trees, secure loose outdoor items and seek shelter indoors.

Motorists should be alert to falling trees and power lines, BOM said.

A yellow warning has also been issued for storms in Bundaberg and surrounding areas.
