Shia LaBeouf is coming to Sydney to take part in a performance artwork at the Sydney Opera House at the venue's first new festival in five years, Bingefest.

Over two days in December, the Opera House will be taken over by cat videos, podcasts, performance art, journalists and video games in a festival designed to celebrate all those things.

For LaBeouf's part, the actor will be in a new participatory performance artwork, alongside the author of The Metamodernist Manifesto, Luke Turner, and Finnish artist Nastja Sade Ronkko.

The trio have worked together on more than a dozen experimental projects using digital and physical networks to explore empathy, emotion and social interaction. One project involved LaBeouf live-streaming as he watched his back catalogue of films in a theatre in New York.

Their event will be free and will take place over two nights from midnight until 6am, and 10pm until 6am.

Other highlights will include cat videos from the internet being broadcast in the Opera House forecourt, a talk on binge-worthy journalism from Julie Snyder, the executive producer of popular podcast Serial, an improv-comedy show from the creator of TV show Community Dan Harmon and the best TV recommendations including a binge-watch of TV show Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
