As 100 anti-Islam protesters rallied in Victoria, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said the action was taking Australia "down the wrong path and the wrong direction".

Under a heavy police presence, around 100 people holding Australian flags gathered at an event in Melton organised by the "True Blue Crew".

They object to what they say is a growing Muslim population in Melbourne's west.

"Australia's a diverse country and I don't believe in fermenting religious paranoia or hatred," Mr Shorten told reporters on Sunday.

"That's not the way this country works together."

Police conducted searches to make sure no weapons were brought to the rally.
