A man will face court after allegedly firing a shot into a vehicle containing four people at Cessnock in NSW's Hunter region.

Police say that just before 10pm on Christmas Day the Toyota Hilux utility pulled up at a home on Mount View Road and a man got out and spoke to a woman living there.

"A short time later, a 28-year-old man walked from inside the home and fired a single round into the window of the Hilux," police said in a statement.

No one was injured and the vehicle left the scene.

On Monday evening police arrested a 28-year-old man in Cessnock and charged him with firing a firearm in a manner likely to injure and possessing a prohibited firearm in a public place.

He was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday.
