Malcolm Turnbull has urged footy players and fans to proudly sing the national anthem at this weekend's grand finals, dismissing a boycott call from outspoken indigenous sportsman Anthony Mundine.

"I think everyone should sing and everyone should just be proud about their country, our country, and the fact that we can come together in sport," the prime minister told Neil Mitchell on 3AW radio on Friday ahead of the AFL and NRL showdowns.

Mundine is urging all players to make a stand in support of the indigenous community, saying Advance Australia Fair was written for the late 1700s when "blackfellas were considered fauna".
