A slippery thief has been charged for selling soapy water disguised as cheap detergent in Melbourne.

It's alleged the man approached elderly victims, usually in their homes or working in the garden, and offered them cheap detergent or alcohol.

After receiving a deposit from the victims, in some cases $500, the man allegedly failed to return with the goods or delivered drums of soapy water.

The 51-year-old Burnside Heights man was charged with six counts of obtaining property by deception and was remanded in custody to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court on November 29.
