A lost bushwalker has been found safe and well in Sydney's south after police dispatchers told her to downland an emergency app on her smartphone so her location could be worked out from GPS coordinates.

About 6pm on Sunday police were called to the Mooray walking track at Heathcote following reports of a lost bushwalker.

Police dispatchers contacted the lost 56-year-old woman and advised her to download the Emergency+ app on her smartphone.

After getting her GPS coordinates police were able to establish a concise search area and police, fire service and ambulance personnel conducting the search found her safe and well.

Inspector Mick Merrett of Miranda Local Area Command said having the exact GPS coordinates from the Emergency+ app saved a lot of search time and he encouraged anyone with a smart phone to download it.
