A man in his 20s has been bitten by a snake, believed to be a dugite, on Rottnest Island off the West Australian coast.

A St John Ambulance spokesman told AAP the man was bitten just before 3pm on Tuesday on Army Jetty Road and he was flown to Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth's south, where he is in a stable condition.

Dugite venom is potentially lethal to humans.
