Diversified miner South32 has reported a four per cent fall in manganese ore production in the first quarter of 2017 but says its on track to achieve its cost guidance for the majority of its production.

South32 posted manganese production of 1.18 million wet metric tonnes for the September quarter, down four per cent, while its metallurgical coal production fell by 32 per cent to 1.43 million tonnes.

The company gave full-year Ausgralian manganese ore production guidance of 3.12 million wet metric tonnes and said if commodity prices and exchange rates prevailed, it would remain on track to achieve cost guidance for most of its upstream operations.
