CRICKET - Aaron Finch equalled the Australian record for fastest one-day international half-century to lift the visitors to a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka. Chasing 213, Australia hauled in the target off just 31 overs. Australia takes an unassailable 3-1 series lead.

SOCCER - Hours before the close of the transfer window, French side Nice have signed controversial striker Mario Balotelli from Liverpool on a free transfer. Meanwhile, Chelsea have agreed on a fee with Paris Saint-Germain for the return of Brazil defender David Luiz. Stoke City have signed striker Wilfried Bony from Manchester City on loan, while Leicester City have paid a club record fee for Sporting Lisbon striker Islam Slimani.

RUGBY - Harlequins have announced the signing of former Sydney Roosters and NSW Waratahs back Alofa Alofa from French club La Rochelle.

NETBALL - Australia's world champion Diamonds have cruised to a 66-46 quad series victory over England in Adelaide. New Zealand had a scrappy 65-46 victory over South Africa.

CYCLING - Chris Froome won a thrilling uphill duel against Nairo Quintana by a bike length to clinch the 11th stage of the Spanish Vuelta. Quintana defended his race lead and is now 54 seconds ahead of Froome, who overtook Alejandro Valverde to move second overall.
