CRICKET - David Warner lifted Australia to a comfortable five-wicket win over Sri Lanka and a 4-1 one-day international series victory. Warner scored 106 as Australia overhauled home side's tally of 195 with seven overs to spare in Pallekele.

CRICKET - Australia will be without injured batsmen Aaron Finch and Chris Lynn for their two-match Twenty20 series with Sri Lanka. Finch suffered a broken finger and Lynn a dislocated shoulder.

TENNIS - Latvian Anastasija Sevastova reached the US Open quarter-finals after beating Britain's 13th seed Johanna Konta 6-4 7-5. Italian Roberta Vinci won through after taming Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko 7-6 (7-5) 6-2. Gael Monfils is in the final eight after sweeping past Marcos Baghdatis 6-3 6-2 6-3.

SOCCER - Sam Allardyce has made a dramatic start as England manager with a 1-0 win over Slovakia in 2018 World Cup qualifying Group F thanks to an Adam Lallana goal in the fifth minute of injury time.

SOCCER - Australia believe captain Mile Jedinak will still play despite missing training ahead of the Socceroos' World Cup qualifier with United Arab Emirates.

MOTORSPORT - Germany's Nico Rosberg won the Italian Grand Prix for Mercedes to cut teammate Lewis Hamilton's Formula One world championship lead to two points with seven races remaining. Hamilton finished second.

MOTORSPORT - Spaniard Maverick Vinales roared to his first MotoGP victory for Suzuki at Silverstone with Britain's Cal Crutchlow second in his home race. Italian great Valentino Rossi completed the podium.

GOLF - Sweden's Alex Noren has defeated Australia's Scott Hend in a play-off to win the European Masters for the second time after a dramatic finish at Crans-sur-Sierre in Switzerland.
