OLYMPICS - Australian cycling great Anna Meares has bowed out of her sprint title defence at the Rio Olympics with 10th place. New Zealander Natasha Hansen beat her in the ride-off for ninth.

OLYMPICS - Australia's women's water polo team has gone down to Hungary in a quarter-final penalty shootout. The Stingers led at each break but finished 8-8 at the end of regular time. Their European rivals won the shootout 5-4.

OLYMPICS - Australia's 49er sailors are back into medal contention but look unlikely to catch gold medal favourite New Zealand. Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen sit third overall, 33 points behind Kiwis Peter Burling and Blair Tuke. The 49ers still have three races to go before the double-points gold medal race.

OLYMPICS - The Australian women's hockey team has been knocked out, losing 4-2 to New Zealand in the quarter-finals.

OLYMPICS - Australians Madeline Heiner-Hills and Genevieve LaCaze have both set personal bests to finish in the top 10 of the women's 3000m steeplechase. Heiner-Hills was seventh and LaCaze ninth, while gold went to Ruth Jebet of Kenya.

OLYMPICS - Australian Chelsea Gubecka has finished 16th in the women's marathon swimming event at the Rio Olympics. Gubecka was in fourth spot at the 2.5km mark of the 10km swim off Copacabana beach but slipped to 14th by halfway.

CRICKET - Australia collapsed to 379 all out after centuries by Shaun Marsh (130) and Steve Smith (119) in reply to Sri Lanka's 355 on the third day of the third Test in Colombo. The home side is 1-22 in their second innings to trail by just two runs at stumps.

TENNIS - Five-times grand slam winner Maria Sharapova, banned in June for two years for doping offences, may be allowed to return in January, according to the Russian Tennis Federation.

SOCCER - Tributes have poured in for former English Premier League striker Dalian Atkinson after he died when police fired a high-voltage Taser stun-gun at him during an incident in his home town.
