OLYMPICS - Rowing gold medallist Kim Brennan has been named as the Australian team flagbearer for the closing ceremony of the Rio Olympics.

OLYMPICS - The Australian men's basketball team has missed out on a medal at the Rio Games after losing 89-88 to Spain in the bronze medal match. The Boomers led by one point with less than 10 seconds on the clock but a controversial late foul call handed Spain two free-throws and the victory.

OLYMPICS - Australia's Olympic chef de mission Kitty Chiller has admitted the team has fallen "well short" of expectations after finishing 10th on the medal table. After coming to Rio hoping for 16 gold medals and a return to the top five on the medal standings, Australia ended with eight gold and a number of disappointing results.

OLYMPICS - The nine Australian Olympic athletes charged with using altered accreditations have been given their passports back and are free to return home.

OLYMPICS - Liam Adams has finished 31st to be the first Australian home in the men's marathon, crossing the finish line in two hours 16 minutes and 12 seconds. Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya took gold in a winning time of 2:08:44.

CRICKET - Half-centuries from Steve Smith and Aaron Finch lifted Australia to a three-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Colombo in the first of five one-day internationals. Smith led the way with a gritty 58 as the tourists reached 7-228 to pass the victory total with 3.1 overs to spare.

CRICKET - India looks set to lose its top ranking after the fourth day of the fourth test against West Indies in Trinidad was washed out, with the match heading for a draw. India must win the match to keep the coveted top spot or concede it to rival Pakistan.

TENNIS - Angelique Kerber lost her bid to take over the WTA No.1 ranking as the German fell 6-3 6-1 in the Cincinnati Masters final to Karolina Pliskova. Serena Williams will remain number one heading into next week's US Open as a result of the Kerber loss.

SOCCER - West Ham have started Premier League life at its new home at the London Stadium by beating 10-man Bournemouth 1-0. Newly-promoted Middlesbrough beat Sunderland 2-1.

CYCLING - Belgium's Gianni Meersman beat a pack of sprinters to claim the Spanish Vuelta's second stage for his first win at a grand tour.

MOTORSPORT - Cal Crutchlow has ended Britain's 35-year wait for a MotoGP race winner with victory in a wet and chaotic Czech Grand Prix in Brno.
