A teenager who allegedly stole a breathalyser from a booze bus in Perth, then advertised it for sale online, has been labelled "dumb and dumber" by police.

They say the 17-year-old boy pinched the alcometer in June, then tried to sell it on a website where people trade items for beer.

With help from members of the public who had seen the online posting, police established the teen's identity and found the device at his home on Tuesday night.

He was charged with stealing by summons and will appear before the Perth Children's Court at a later date.

"Selling a stolen Booze Bus breath machine on FB beer economy page is a bad idea #dontstealfromPOLICE #dumbndumber," Armadale Police posted on Twitter.
