Stolen giraffes upset Qld children

This is no tall story - two giraffes have been kidnapped from a Queensland childcare centre.

The fibreglass giraffes were taken from Bright Horizons Child Care on the northern Gold Coast in the past six weeks, much to the disappointment of the centre's children, who want their playground "pets" back.

The two-metre-high giraffes, named George and Charlie, were installed when the Ormeau centre opened in February 2015.

The first was stolen early on October 3 and the second was taken on November 12.

The theft has left a sole giraffe alongside an elephant in the playground.

"The first one took two of them to carry out," a centre spokeswoman told AAP.

"We are hoping they come to their senses and bring them back because the children miss them."

It's not the first time a giraffe has been kidnapped in southeast Queensland.

A 120kg bronze giraffe, named Henrietta, was taken from outside a Brisbane vet at Wilston in March last year.

It was found several months later cut into pieces, but it was restored and is back outside the front door.
