A stolen Mercedes rammed into a police car by reversing at speed before hooning off in Melbourne's outer suburbs, with police now hunting for the driver.

Police are searching for a tattooed man who was behind the wheel.

Police pulled over the Mercedes on Gladstone Road in Dandenong about 11.20pm on Friday, November 25.

As an officer got out of the car, the Mercedes reversed into the front of the police car.

The officer was not hurt in the ramming, but the vehicle was extensively damaged and needed to be towed.

The Mercedes then sped off along Gladstone Road and was found dumped in a Parkmore shopping centre car park on Monday.

It's believed the car was stolen in a Cheltenham burglary on October 22 and used in a petrol drive-off on October 24 in Skye.

Police are searching for a man aged in his 20s or 30s, of European appearance, with an arm tattoo and wearing a black cap.
