Sam Stosur has lost out to Czech Barbora Strycova in straight sets in the second round of the Cincinnati Open.

Stosur lost a marathon opening-set tiebreaker 13-11 to the World No.20 before dropping the second set to crash 7-6 (13-11) 6-3 in just under two hours.

After holding her serve throughout the first set, Stosur was broken twice in the second, while only breaking back once on Wednesday (Thursday AEST).

The news was better for Daria Gavrilova, who comfortably beat 17th seed Elina Svitolina in straight sets.

Svitolina, fresh from knocking Serena Williams out of the Olympic tournament in Rio, won just four games in the 6-2 6-2 loss.

Gavrilova, who was forced to qualify for the WTA Premier 5 tournament, broke the Ukranian's serve five times in a dominant display, less than two weeks out from the US Open.

Meanwhile 13th seed Swiss Belinda Bencic was knocked out in straight sets by Hungarian Timea Babos, unlike fellow seeds Simona Halep, Roberta Vinci and Carla Suarez Navarro who all won through to the third round.
