Super package still some time away

Exactly how the Turnbull government plans to change superannuation tax concessions might not be known for a month at the very least.

There has been speculation a refined package of measures might be presented to a meeting of Liberal and Nationals MPs in Canberra next week when parliament resumes.

But Finance Minister Mathias Cormann played down expectations on Friday when he told ABC radio the government was going through a proper and orderly process about changes that were not scheduled to start until July 1, 2017.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott again questioned the planned changes, especially a $500,000 cap on non-concessional contributions that has angered the Liberal Party base.

"Governments should be very careful about changing the rules once the game has started," he told Alan Jones on 2GB radio in reference to the measure's starting point of 2007.
