Support for endangered giant lobster

Conservationists are calling for the declaration of a new national park in Tasmania to help save the endangered giant freshwater lobster.

The Wilderness Society is using Wednesday's Threatened Species Day to highlight the plight of the the largest freshwater invertebrate in the world, along with Tasmania's swift parrot and masked owl, also at risk of extinction.

Society spokesman Vica Bailey said gazetting the areas as new formal reserves, such as a lobster forest national park, was a "no-brainer" given the needs of threatened species, advice of scientists and the widely acknowledged economic and community benefits.
