Suspicions over Toowoomba motel fire

Police are investigating whether a fire that tore through a former motel in Toowomba on Friday night.

The Glennon House Motel caught fire around 11pm and quickly became engulfed in flames, which caused extensive damage before firefighters could get the blaze under control.

The motel provided low-cost accommodation to people, who had to travel from remote areas to Toowoomba for specialist medical care, for more than a decade.

It closed in mid-2016 due to plans to build a seven-storey development on the site, according to local media reports.

No one was inside at the time of the fire and police are treating the blaze as suspicious.

A crime scene has been established at the site.

Queensland police are also investigating a fire that damaged a house on Brisbane's west on Friday evening.

The house at Wembley Road, Karawatha became fully engulfed in flames around 6.15pm.

Witnesses have reported seeing a number of people leave the home shortly before the blaze started.

Police guarded the scene overnight and investigations into the cause of the fire will continue.
