Fans could have the chance to spend a night with Sydney's most famous icon if a proposal to allow exclusive sleepovers in the Sydney Opera House goes ahead.

Two experiences are planned: up to two nights' accommodation for five guests, five times a year; and a one-off group of 100 guests, who would sail off to sleep under the shells of the majestic arts centre that sits on Bennelong Point.

Guests would also get the unique opportunity to snore in some of the building's most famous theatres including the Board Room, Utzon Room, Joan Sutherland Theatre, Northern Foyers, Joan Sutherland Theatre Southern Foyer, Concert Hall Northern Foyers and Concert Hall South Foyers.

The Sydney Opera House Trust has lodged the plan with the NSW government and the public have six weeks, until October 24, to have a say, the Department of Planning and Environment says.
