Students at a western Sydney high school have launched an online petition to have the humble chicken schnitzel on the menu at their end-of-year formal.

Elderslie High School students are urging the school to bypass fancy cuisine such as rosemary crusted lamb and instead serve the traditional pub dish.

"What happened to the classic meal of chicken schnitzel, chips, salad, and gravy?", the petition reads.

"Students of Elderslie don't want to be eating ... Rosemary crusted lamb, Beef filet (sic), Sauteed potato or no Mustard seed mash?"

The petition, signed off with the hashtag #SchnittyForThePeople2k16, had received more than 500 signatures on Friday afternoon.

Elderslie High School has been contacted for comment about their formal catering plan.
