Thirsty Sydneysiders went through a record-breaking amount of water over the weekend, with water usage hitting its highest point all year and its fourth-highest ever.

Sydney Water recorded 2014 megalitres of water used on Sunday, as the city sweltered in 37C heat.

"This is the most water used in a single day since February 2014 and the fourth-highest demand day on record," Sydney Water treatment manager Ben Blayney said on Thursday.

"(This) is the same as 805 Olympic-sized swimming pools or more than eight billion standard glasses of water."

Sydney worked its way through 2022 ML on a steamy day in January 2007, 2020 ML on January 8, 2013 and 2019 ML on February 19, 2014.

Mr Blayney said the water was used for drinking, cooking, washing, fighting fires and filling swimming pools.

"We supply more than 1.4 billion litres of water a day to homes and business in greater Sydney and households use 70 per cent of this," he said.
