The first eight families to be resettled in Tasmania under a federal scheme for refugees fleeing violence in Syria and Iraq have arrived in the state.

The new Tassie residents have been granted permanent visas after the Abbott government in September 2015 said it would make an extra 12,000 humanitarian places available for Syrian and Iraqi refugees.

About 20 families will call Tasmania home by Christmas, Premier Will Hodgman said in a statement on Friday. They'll join an existing Syrian community of about 300, many of whom arrived in the 1970s and 1980s.
