The number of serious house fires across Tasmania has increased by a third over the past four years, according to data collected by one of the state's major insurance companies.

Between July 2012 and June 2016 there were 64 claims stemming from house fires causing more than $100,000 damage, compared to 47 claims for the preceding period, the RACT said on Monday.

"It is obviously important to stay warm during the winter, but too many homes are either damaged or completely lost because of basic human error," RACT Insurance boss Trent Sayers said, citing a spike in fires during winter caused by heaters.
