Tasmania's tourism sector continues to grow with interstate visitor numbers up according to fresh data.

In the 2015-16 financial year 997,800 visitors from elsewhere in Australia crossed Bass Strait, an increase of one per cent on the previous year, each staying for an average of eight nights, Premier Will Hodgman told parliament on Thursday citing figures released in the Tasmanian Visitor Survey.

"Significantly we are now within striking distance of the magic million interstate visitors coming here," he said.
