Tas parliament leads on marriage reform

Tasmania's parliament has become the first in Australia to show in-principle support for gay marriage in both chambers after an upper house vote.

Tasmania's Legislative Council on Tuesday voted eight-to-five to back a motion in support of marriage equality in a move that comes after a similarly clear result from the lower house last year.

"The Tasmanian upper house's support for the principle of marriage equality is a historic moment in the marriage equality debate ... it sends a message to federal parliament to get on with the job of passing this reform as soon as possible," Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesman Rodney Croome said.
