A portrait of Tasmania's first female premier, Lara Giddings, has joined the halls of Hobart's parliament house.

More than two years after the former Labor leader lost government, the 43-year-old who remains on the opposition frontbench, on Friday reflected on her career since being first elected at age 23 as Australia's youngest female MP.

"I hope it's not too far now when we stop talking about women in that respect ... that there are no more firsts, that it's just a natural part of everything we do that we have women leaders," Ms Giddings said.
