Thieves who robbed a Melbourne home in August could be undone by their decision to catch a cab and pay for the fare using the victim's stolen credit card.

Police say three men entered a home in Coburg in Melbourne's north on August 25 and as the victims slept, stole laptops, mobile phones, a video game console and a wallet.

The offenders then used the victim's credit card to pay for a taxi fare on the same morning at 4am.

The thieves also used the card again in Essendon and Strathmore.

On Friday police released images showing two of the three men travelling in the taxi, calling for public assistance to help identify them.

One man is wearing a hoodie and the other a cap. Both are aged between 17 and 20.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with aggravated burglary, theft and obtaining property by deception in relation to the crime, and is scheduled to appear at a Children's court at a later date.
