Taylor faces do-or-die WNBA match

Australian basketball great Penny Taylor may be about to play her final professional match, with her Phoenix Mercury facing a do-or-die WNBA final.

The three-time Olympian captained the Opals at Rio but announced this would be her last season following the team's shock quarter-final exit at the hands of Serbia.

Taylor's since returned to Phoenix. who scraped into the playoffs in eighth position with an 81-65 win over San Antonio Stars last weekend.

A crowd of more than 10,000 turned out for her final home match, where she played 17 minutes, notching nine points, five rebounds and four assists.

The Mercury, coached by Australia's Sandy Brondello, now face an elimination match against Indiana Fever on Thursday morning AEST.

Under the new WNBA top-eight finals format, the four lowest-ranked teams face elimination matches in the opening fortnight before progressing to best of five rounds in the semi-final and final.

Taylor, 35, is in her 13th WNBA season in a career that started with Victoria's Dandenong Rangers and included stints in Europe and China.

She has been part of all three of Phoenix's championship seasons and led Australia's Opals to a world championship in 2006.

Should Phoenix beat Indiana, they'll play either third-placed New York Liberty or fourth-placed Chicago Sky on Monday.

In the other elimination round-one match, Atlanta Dream host Seattle Storm.
